Solstice yf has a global warming potential (GWP) that is 99.9% better than previously used HFC-134a’s GWP (at 1,300) and even lower than that of carbon dioxide (at 1). Solstice yf even exceeds the requirements of landmark environmental legislation like the MAC Directive in the EU, CAFE in the USA and similar legislation in other markets such as Japan and South Korea. Independent studies show that global use of Solstice yf would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to permanently removing more than 30 million cars from the roads worldwide, or about 3 percent of the total global fleet.

An advantage of Solstice yf over compliant alternatives, including CO2, is that it presents a cost-efficient near drop-in solution. It can be used with only minor changes to existing air-conditioning systems for a smooth transition to Solstice yf for OEMs.

Solstice 1234yf refrigerant performs consistently in all climates and car models, allowing passengers to enjoy efficient performance of their MACs.
A study by Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) found that in hot climates Solstice yf air-conditioning systems also perform similarly to MACs with the old refrigerant HFC-134a. This is due to their excellent fuel efficiency. If applied to the entire European automobile fleet, the advantage of Solstice yf’s fuel efficiency, over CO2, could save 8 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. This equates to as much as 4.5 billion euros in lower annual fuel costs for Europeans.

Solstice yf is safely cooling millions of cars around the world. Prior to its adoption, comprehensive safety tests by a wide range of third-party experts concluded that Solstice yf is safe for use in automobiles. These conclusions have been validated by the Joint Research Centre, the EU’s top scientific and technical body as well as SAE International, the recognized experts worldwide on automobile safety.

To meet the growing demand, Honeywell is investing significantly. Approximately $300 million of investments are being made by the company and key suppliers to increase production capacity for Solstice yf. This will ensure sustained availability to customers worldwide.
